Chicken Rise is a guide for people who keep a few hens in the back yard: what is safe to feed them and how much, which breed suits your climate, how to build and clean a coop, raising chicks, and the strange things chickens do.
Who writes it
A note on our names: Chicken Rise is written by a small team under pen names, one name for each job. Tanner Barnsley is the name on our chicken guides.
We are not vets. If a bird is unwell, off her feed, or you think she has eaten something toxic, call an avian vet rather than working from a blog post, including this one.
How a guide is made
- Toxic, or just untidy? The dangerous answers are said plainly and never hedged, because a hedge is what gets a bird killed.
- How much, and how often? Almost nothing is poison in a peck and safe in a bucket, so the amount is part of the answer.
- Where the answer came from. Veterinary sources, extension services or what keepers report: each guide says which, and says so when nobody has a good answer.
