Tell it about the bird: goose or gander, what colour, what it is like. Then pick the kind of name you want: a pun, an old-fashioned name, something cute, or a name with some swagger. You get twelve names at a time, and a new twelve whenever you ask. Every one is written for geese, and none is borrowed from the chicken, duck or turkey lists. Naming a whole gaggle? Ask for a themed set.

Not many names fit all of that, so a few from the other styles are mixed in.

Quick answer: a good goose name fits the goose. The gander who sees off the postman has earned Goosifer or Count Honkula. A grey Toulouse gander is a Lautrec, after the painter from Toulouse, and the goose who leads the gaggle across the field is an Akka. Tell this generator goose or gander, what colour and what it is like. Pick the kind of name you want, a pun, an old-fashioned name, something cute or something mighty, and it gives you twelve. Ask again for twelve more.
A goose is somebody’s pet here
Plenty of goose names online are really about the table. You won’t find those here: no Foie, no Christmas, nothing that sounds like a festive menu. The geese people name are the ones that guard the gate and honk at every car, and the names are written for those birds. None is borrowed from our chicken, duck or turkey name generators.
Four kinds of name, kept apart
- Funny: the puns. Honk Hogan, Goosezilla, Beaky Blinders, Honk Solo and Gaggle McGaggleface. For a gander, Sir Honksalot, The Goosefather or Attila the Honk. For a goose, Mother Goose, Lucy Goosey or Gaggle Gaga.
- Classic: old-fashioned names for a bird that walks like it owns the place. Petunia, after the silly goose of Roger Duvoisin’s picture books, and Philomena or Honoria. For a gander, Augustus, Horatio or Montgomery.
- Cute: Floof, Tuppence, Downy, Snugglegoose and Waddlepop. Good for goslings and the smaller Chinese geese.
- Mighty: Samurai, Warden and Bastion for a guard goose. Akka and Lagertha for the goose who runs the gaggle. Hannibal, or Brennus for a gander: Brennus was the Gaul whose night attack on Rome the sacred geese gave away.
Pick “a mix” and you get all four together. A colour name is only offered for that colour, so there is no Gandalf the White for a grey Toulouse and no Ganderson Cooper for a white Embden. A name that suits the bird’s personality goes to the top.
Naming a whole gaggle
Geese are happiest in company, so they often need names in threes and fours. Choose “a themed set” and you get names that belong together. Top Gun gives a gander and his wingmen. The Night Watch or Castle Keep suits a flock of guard geese. Cloud Spotting, Cumulus, Nimbus, Stratus and Cirrus, fits white Embdens. Akka’s Flock borrows Nils Holgersson’s geese, named for the Finnish numbers one to four.
